Foot/Ankle Sprains

What is a sprain?

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of the ligaments (the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together in your joints).  Ankle sprains are the most common.  They typically occur when the tissue around the joint gets stressed due to unusual movement of the joint.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of an ankle sprain include:

  • Pain, especially when bearing weight
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Instability in ankle
  • Popping sensation around time of injury

Causes

A sprained ankle occurs when you roll, twist, or turn your ankle.  This can cause the ligaments that support the joint to stretch and tear due to movement beyond their normal range of motion.  This can occur during a fall, an awkward landing, excessive walking or exercising on an uneven surface, or another person stepping or landing on your foot during a sports activity.

Treatment

Chiropractic adjustments can treat and prevent lack of mobility as the sprain heals.  These treatments would involve soft tissue manipulation in and around the ankle.
